Congratulations Brigette, Sonia, and Kym. the hairspray! haha!
It’s a little bit fun to find Aussie peeps creating new products and turning dreams into reality. It’s even more fun to find that they’re creating products that are eco-friendly and socially conscious. The funnest bit of all is when they are low in toxins, chemical-free, and without animal products, or being tested on them.
Adriana Woolf always loved makeup. After being diagnosed with Secondary Reynaud’s, and a connective tissue disorder, she was advised by her doctors to avoid contact with toxins and chemical (found in many makeup and skincare products) to avoid penetration of her skin and potential harm to her organs.
When she couldn’t find anything that quite fit her needs, she combined her passion for beauty with her entrepreneurial spirit and made her own line of makeup at Bare Blossom.
Alongside her husband (who has an Honours degree in Biological Science), Adriana works at bringing safe, cruelty-free mineral makeup and makeup products to the masses. All while they both work as lawyers (Adriana also has a degree in Psychology) at their Brisbane law firm! Inspiring stuff.
Adriana is an advocate for animal rights, and Bare Blossom is registered with PETA and the UK Vegan Society, which is super-rad. Bare Blossom products also do not contain things like parabens, propylene glycol, phalates, sodium laurel sulphate, and sodium laureth sulphate (among others). It is safe for use during pregnancy, is gluten-free, and is formulated for use with most skin types.
Bare Blossom has a full range of products including foundation, eyeshadow, blush, lipstick, nail polish, and mascara; as well as brushes, sharpeners, blotting paper, and skincare products.
I am just blown away that Adriana has managed to create makeup that is beautiful, trendy, and of such high quality, all while keeping it low-tox, chemical-free, and animal-friendly. It can happen, people! And the best part is that it is totally affordable (for example, eye shadows are around $20). I was sent a foundation and cute little vegan kabuki brush, and while I was initially skeptical of mineral foundation’s ability to cover my uneven skin tone (and being sent quite a light foundation colour), I was pleasantly surprised with the level of coverage. It does feel slightly drying on first application, but my skin’s natural oils soon work their magic to create a really lovely overall colour and breathable coverage. It lasts quite well during the day, and while I haven’t tried it with the accompanying blush or eyeshadow, I can see that they would blend really well with it. There’s also a mineral cream foundation for those of us who are a bit wary of powder foundations, which I’d like to try.
Adriana has very kindly offered readers the chance to win one of three Mineral Foundation Powders, worth $45 each. All you need to do is leave a comment on this blog telling us your funniest makeup memory. Were you a fan of blue eyeshadow in the ’80s? Did you commit the crime of darker lip liner and light lipstick (tell me you didn’t!). I have plenty of makeup fails in my repertoire, which I now look back on quite fondly.
Three winners will be chosen next Monday, December 16 at noon Queensland time. I will notify them by email, and also name them on this blog post. Winners can choose the shade that will work best for them, and they will be posted by Bare Blossom.
Thanks so much everyone, and good luck!

I used to wear so much blush it looked like my face was on fire, so wish someone had told me!!

Make up fail? Wearing face products with urea in it! Ugh. So glad there are vegan alternatives!

I was the tragic blue eyeshadow chick or green or whatever colour matched my clothes but i did grow up in the 70s so i thought i was cool x
Brigette @ Patchwork Natural says
My awkward teenage years involved bright blue eyeshadow with over the top panda-style eyeliner (purposely smudged with water in the morning to give the ‘drippy’ effect), coupled with black lipstick, and if I was feeling really hardcore maybe a few swirls drawn next to my eye in eyeliner. God help me when I look at photos.

I NEVER have makeup fails, I always look POLISHED and PUT-TOGETHER and totally without too-dark foundation chin lines or wonky eyeliner flicks. Never. Always look perfect. Definitely.
Sonia @ Natural New Age Mum says
I think matching mauve eyeshadow and lipstick in the 80s was probably my biggest make up fail. I am sure I have destroyed all the evidence though!

In your blog I read the words ‘blue eye shadow’, and ‘commit the crime’, and it took me back over 40 yrs as a young teenager, maybe wanting to rebel against a ‘good catholic’ upbringing, and be a ‘bad girl’, that I ….stole….a bright blue iridescent eye shadow!!! It was in a little round ball and I think it was Max Factor. I can still remember the fear of getting caught, as well as the excitement of performing the heinous deed, as I clutched my trophy in my sweaty little hand and headed for the door, hearing only the giggles of my partners in crime, and not the half expected ‘Stop” from a saleswoman. As we lived in a country town I spent the next week fearfully wondering if my misdemeanor would get back to my parents, and of course I couldn’t wear it, as mum would have asked where I got it. It must have played on my mind, so In true ‘catholic guilt’ fashion, a couple of years later with my first pay packet, I headed back to the shop and bought one in green, not because I really liked the eye shadow, but to make myself feel better!! Its probably not a funny story but it still brings a smile to my face and was a good memory to hold when parenting my own children. Cheers

I was hairdressing in the 80s, think massive perm coupled with several bright shades of eye shadow with contrasting colours mascara.

Sometime in my late teens I wanted to look tanned and beautiful in photos taken at a party. I got a spray on tan and used a foundation powder with talc in it (which I didn’t realise reflects light). In all of the photos from that night I looked unnaturally dark and orange with a ghostly white face. Silly me!

Oh I remember doing the whole too-much-blue-eyeshadow when I was a teen. In the 90s. It was a terrible look!!!

I was about 6. My best friend and I were putting on her mum’s makeup when I thought it would be excellent to give our eyebrows a little colour. Black waterproof mascara probably wasn’t the best way. We had thick, black slugs above our eyes for a couple of days. You CANNOT get that stuff out haha!
Elizabeth Wooden says
When we were teenagers we loved boxes of eyeshadow foam pads that had the eyeshadow all applied (in often very bright clashy patterns) that you would then place against your eyelid and swipe across leaving the eyeshadow in place. Makes for very amusing photos now as my best friend and I did not wear alot of other makeup at the time but had huge green, blue & pink eyelids!!

everything and everything with white eyeliner.

I was getting ready for a very high level, important meeting and wanted my makeup to be perfect. I took extra special care and was running a little late. At the last minute, I thought it would be great to spritz my face with some rosewater. Was it rosewater? No, no it wasn’t! I ‘spritzed’ my face with extra hold hairspray and had no choice but to go into my meeting like that! Everything stayed in place though. I don’t think I blinked the entire meeting. Hahahaha

I went to a laughter yoga class recently, after work. I had a good time at the class, then left the studio without checking my face in the mirror before going home (why would I?). Once home I realised I had eyeliner and mascara all over my face because I had laughed (and cried) so much at yoga! haha. Good memories!

Hmmmm…. well for a long time in high school, I couldn’t get eyelash curlers to work, and I didn’t realize that what mascara you use could make a big difference… I had one that just clumped and looked awful and then I just gave up on mascara. So I’d swear eyeliner with bare lashes… which, I guess is kind of a lame “funny story” but it’s one of my weird pet peeves now

My funniest makeup memory (although the bride probably didn’t think it was funny at the time) is when the makeup artist decided to put hot pink lipstick on every bridesmaid. It was a multicultural wedding party so each bridesmaid had varying skin tones. Needless to say the color didn’t look so great on us with darker skin. When the bride saw us, she immediately asked us to wipe it off, which we happily did.

Wearing way too much foundation and powder in middle and high school. I have to look back and laugh. So embarrassing.

Putting on foundation at home in poor light then going out & looking in mirror to find out that it wasn’t blended properly into neckline for hairline!

My funniest memory is wearing foundation for the first time…a rather cheap beauty supply one…and having it melt all over the collar of my shirt over the course of the school day. Funny now, horrifying then!

When my brother and I were kids I used to dress him up as a girl. Over the long summer holidays I would convince him to let me do a full face of make up on him, put him in a dress and stuff the front of it, he would have been eight or so and I would have been ten or so. I was too young to wear make up, so it was the stuff Mum had given me to play dress ups with, he looked beautiful, I think there are photos.

The thing with funny makeup memories is that they are only funny in retrospect! In the 80s we all tried to look like Marie Osmond, with loads of blusher, heavy eye make up, and seriously red lipsticks. We thought we were gorgeous, but looking back, the word ‘clown’ springs to mind!

When I was new to makeup, once I applied too much mascara. Unfortunately, it started to rain and I forgot umbrella at home. Then I looked like a panda. So embarrassed. 🙁

My funniest make up memory was of when I was 8. I received a make up kit for my birthday, it was fantastic and every little girls dream. I’d seen in one of Mum’s magazine, a model with rainbow eyeshadow and decided that was my style for the local fete that day. I received a lot of comments on my “look” that day, I thought everybody truly loved it, looking back I’m sure my make up application as an 8 year was a bit laughable.

Putting on lip liner in the morning only to discover in the pm that it was eyebrow liner….pink lipstick plus brown outline…thankfully it was uni and “weird” is normal

Was I a fan of blue eyeshadow in the ’80s? I was a fan in the late 90’s early 2000’s… My bad.
