This is far and away Abby’s favourite book at the moment.
“Poddy, mum?” she asks. I oblige. Not only do I want to encourage reading, but I want an excuse to pile everyone on my lap so I can sniff their heads and kiss their cheeks while I read them a story. Anytime. As many times a day as I can.
Just as I was starting to tire of of poor old Noddy’s daily routine, Abby started taking over.
“Up, Poddy, em en ne seben, en eh up!”
“Mmm sebem, eh ah bed, eh ah floor.”
“Bath, Poddy, seben, eh teef, eh an un eh coves.”
Poddy then goes on to have a “sammitch”, go to “day care” and drive a cat around all day. She can’t be reading the words, but she knows what they say and in what order they go. She fascinates me every day with what she learns. She just turned two yesterday and I am frantically recording all the cute things she does so I never forget how adorable two can really be.
Then we go through and I ask her who and what each of these pictures are.
When she picks up the book later in the day, she sits on her little couch and I can hear her saying “issat? boat. issat? moon. issat? effunt”. She points with her chubby finger and dimpled fist and I die a thousand deaths.
And I get to do it all again with this one.

Look at her painted nails, squish! Their language development is just such a joyride. I can’t really remember what it was like before Scarlett could talk (because she never shuts up!) but I do remember being delighted by watching her do similar things. Ahhh, the payback for all the hard work! xx
Veggie Mama says
Haha I’m beginning to know that! Abby has been talking since she was 9 months old, but the last month she has started a 24-hour-a-day commentary. So cute!

What a joyous motherhood ! My son was such a talking parrot those days.
Veggie Mama says
Yes it is hilarious! we have lovely conversations and I can’t quite believe she can talk so much. And the sense of humour she has!

This stage is just delightful. Basically all I did with my first was sing songs and read books, I’m shit at everything else. Second baby doesn’t get as many books! He kind of struggles out of my lap every time and I worry he’s missing out! He gets more “incidental” book reading when I’m reading to my oldest. But we are like Bookaboo round this joint – a story a day or we just can’t play! Also TV. We watch a lot of that too. Hahahaha.
Veggie Mama says
Eek, you should see me try to “craft” haha. I just read to them all day!
Kel says
Oh dear, this is making me want a babby so bad – cluck. Shame the radar is looking babbyless at this stage.
Veggie Mama says
I remember that feeling x

I loved this stage it is a beautiful stage and they learn and learn we would always read our favourite books, and do singing games but by far my favourite way to play with my children is reading them books I have kept their faves and my daughter got them out the other day and said I remember that book Mum so glad you kept it,it was One teddy Bear is enough ,it is about sharing and it may be tattered and well loved but it will be there when they have children ,and I think it instills into them a love of reading and yes cuddles are a plus and sniffing their heads, they never smell so good.
Veggie Mama says
I’m going to keep our favourites too! We have hundreds of children’s books and I’ve only just started! So many to get through and learn to love x
Lila Wolff says
Oh so lovely. Reading is my favourite, I’ve nearly lost my voice some days with endless loops of Hairy McLairy and Hugless Douglas. I can’t wait until Eve “reads”.
Veggie Mama says
It is way cute! I couldn’t quite believe that’s what she was doing. Reading is my first love so I had every intention of forcing it on my young, haha x
Sarah Raaen says
Oh look at those painted fingers & toes – adorable! This all makes me so very clucky! Such magical moments…for now I will just pop over here for my dose of ‘baby love’!

One of the most adorable posts I’ve read in a long time. Made me want to drag all my kids onto my lap and smell their heads – the eleven year old may think I’m being a tad weird though lol. Fostering a love of reading in your children at such a young age is one of the best gifts you can give them – well done!
Veggie Mama says
Thank you! It’s important to me because it meant so much to me growing up. I will totally sniff their heads at 11 – and then duck the swatting away! xo

LOVED reading this post! Completely agree with encouraging a love of books and reading! Nothing makes my heart sing more than when my little man comes up to me saying “‘ooks! ‘ooks! Taaaaa”. Thanks for yet another brilliant post!
Veggie Mama says
Aw how polite! That is way cute. I was hoping mine would like books, reading is a great love of mine.

I fail at it more than I’d like to, but I try. When you know better, you do better, right?

Veggie Mama says
Oh gosh, I remember that! I loved it! I loved all the Sesame Street Golden Books. I bought a ton for my two x

Best post ever!!!! I just got so much pleasure from reading her gorgeous little baby words. Noddy has such a special place in my memory and heart from my own childhood and Abby reading along reminded me of my own children at this age. One of mine had such a good memory that he could memorize his favourite books and make it look like he could actually read…at two! So cute.
Veggie Mama says
Apparently I did that! My mum thought I was a genius 🙂
Polly says
I just love watching my kids discover a favourite book. Both the boys have coveted Dear Zoo and I borrowed both Going on a bear hunt and my dad so many times from the library that I bought them for our personal library. Noddy seems to be a perfect choice!
Veggie Mama says
Ooh we have Going on a Bear Hunt, and it comes with a CD – Very helpful in the car! (and for me because I go a bit batty with the repetitive books)
Talia Carbis says
Eek! So incredibly cute!!
