Halloween was very sedate this year – and hot.
I’d spent all day sweltering in the school canteen and the thought of roaming the neighbourhood in the bright sun almost gave me an attack of the vapours.
Fortunately, it was very low-key (and there was pizza and cider involved).
We’d also been invited to a Halloween-themed party the weekend before, and my costume went awry when I realised we didn’t have a witches’ hat. My black ensemble soon found itself with a headscarf instead and I went as a fortune teller. It’s also one of the few occasions my natural hair comes in handy.
My contribution to the bring-a-plate was these very last-minute (but delicious) witches’ fingers.
For the full shebang day though, I went as “sweaty canteen lady”. It was so lifelike.
After roaming someone else’s neighbourhood for a while so all the kids could go together, we went home and patrolled our own stoop for the trick-or-treaters who were left.
I also had a very strong mojito.
We saw some very cosy front-yard parties though and I thought for next year that’s exactly what we’ll do. Set up a marquee, get an esky and some deck chairs and let the fun come to us. I think I’ll start raiding the cut-price post-Halloween decorations from now.
