Do you know what’s been on high rotation around here?
This:
I have every intention of introducing Jem, Poochie, Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Bananaman, She-Ra, The Wuzzles, Gummi Bears, The Snorks, The Smurfs, Fraggle Rock, Dangermouse, Inspector Gadget, Barbie and the Rockers, Roger Ramjet, David the Gnome, My Little Pony, Strawberry Shortcake, Ninja Turtles, and that one show about tiny people on an island cleaning pollution out of the ocean who’s name I can never remember. When I remember it.
Oh my god, wait – it’s The Smoggies! And the little people on the island were Suntots! Man, I’ve asked people this question for YEARS and nobody ever knew what the hell I was talking about.
I have so many more up my sleeve (wait til we get to the ’90s!) What was your childhood favourite?
Danica Burrows says
I loved those shows where Tony Robbinson would just narrate a story about frogs and people and whatever while walking around the place… and i feel compeled to introduce the yard ape to “Hunter”.
Veggie Mama says
Yep Hunter is at the top of my list! But harder to find 🙁 We had to watch it at school and I sing the theme song every time someone names their kid Hunter.
Kerry says
Was that Fat Tulip’s Garden? I have vague memories of loving that too. I was a massive Care Bears fan – my neighbor taped over the VHS copy she had because I demanded to watch it every time I was over there! Ninja Turtles also ruled.
Danica Burrows says
Yes! Thank you… now i know the name and I can google it up.
Vanessa says
Oh loved so many of these. Inspector Gadget was right up there as I loved Get Smart too. Thanks for the mid week nostalgia hit! x
Veggie Mama says
You can always get good nostalgia at Veggie Mama!
Kat - The Organised Housewife says
Ooh brings back beautiful childhood memories! I LOVED the Smoggies!
Veggie Mama says
I can’t believe I couldn’t remember them!
Tasha Batsford says
The Mysterious Cities of Gold. Oh Yes.
I am actually in a really bad mood with modern children’s TV today. For the first time this morning my 2 year old daughter told me that a cartoon was for boys, not for girls (It was Max Steel) and there was no persuading her until she saw a female character on there.
Veggie Mama says
nooooooooooooooo!
Tasha Batsford says
How does it even happen?!?! It’s not like she gets it from us, we live and breathe moveable gender roles every day FFS – I’m the worker, the old man is the stay at home dad!
Veggie Mama says
haha sometimes I think it’s ingrained in their DNA.
Reannon @shewhorambles says
The Flinstones, the Jetsons, the Smurfs, Scooby Doo….now that’s how you do kids cartoons!
But I’m a bit pissed with the Jetsons these days. They totally made out we’d have flying cars by the 2000’s. Where’s my flying car mofo’s!!!?
Veggie Mama says
fuck the flying cars, where’s my robot maid?
Reannon @shewhorambles says
Yes!!! Weres my Rosie?!
Christina Howes says
I love this post! What a walk down memory lane! I loved Rainbow Brite too!
Veggie Mama says
She was the best!
MotherDownUnder says
Ha ha…we have a few Fraggles books…I keep meaning to find the show for C.
And if you need a Jem costume, just shout…it was my go to Halloween costume for most of my adult years. Truly outrageous!
Veggie Mama says
Hahah I used to talk to my earrings a LOT.
Hugzilla says
I’m pretty sure that She-Ra was officially my first feminist role model.
Veggie Mama says
So hardcore!
sammie@theannoyedthyroid.com says
I loved this trip down Memory Lane. I loved the Mr Men, Pipkins and Bagpuss, but you’d have to be an old fogey and have grown up in the mother country to remember them. They just don’t make programmes like they used to! Oh, and the Wombles. Weren’t they the cutest?
Veggie Mama says
The Wombles were ADORABLE.
annaspargoryan says
The Wuzzles! Sadly, no one else seems to have watched it and I am alone in the nostalgia corner.
Veggie Mama says
I’m here! With Elaroo.
annaspargoryan says
Oh! Thank goodness! I’m a Bumblelion gal myself.
Taryn says
I loved fraggle rock! I bought it years ago on DVD s my kiddies could share in my childhood, thankfully they loved it too! We are all big Jim Henson fans in this house. Another favourite was Monkey Magic, that show was so weird but awesome!
Veggie Mama says
Haha yeah I’ve heard that has quite a few devotees!
Danika Ehlers says
Raggy Dolls!
Veggie Mama says
Dolls like you and me!
Engaging Women - Martine Harte says
The Early Bird Show! Marty the Monster.
Veggie Mama says
Excellent choices!
Sarah@ Slapdash Mama says
Astro boy! Agh! LOVE! And Dangermouse was basically the best. “Penfold! Lower your eyebrows!”
Veggie Mama says
Hahah I loved it so much.
Angela says
Catweazle! I think maybe a bit too scary for a 6 and 3 yr old though, so will wait another few years.
Lilybett and Boy says
Dear Boy gets all Penfold and says ‘crumbs, DM!’, whenever he’s covered in his lunch. Best thing ever.
Veggie Mama says
oh that is SO CUTE!
