Congratulations Wendy! I’ve no doubt the prize will help you meet your diet goals.

Like most food choices, how one eats one’s oats can be a hotly-contested topic. Those of us who dig our daily bowl are fierce in our defence of what we eat on it. I grew up with a deep devotion to sugar and cream, while my friend insisted on brown sugar and butter. I thought she had lost her mind.
I will eat oats in any form (possibly not the brown sugar and butter business though, I still can’t come around to that). I will eat them in cookies, in biscuits, in muesli bars, flapjacks, in veggie sausage rolls, or I can go old school and eat them with just a little apple and cinnamon. Simple is best, after all.
My morning (and let’s face it, sometimes dinner) porridge these days is a much more interesting affair than the cream and sugar days of my youth. While we’re being honest though, that gets busted out occasionally too, in the name of cosy nostalgia. My one small change for the Loving Earth challenge for a better, healthier life last year was to take the goodness of simple oats and spice them up with extra nutritiousness and deliciousness – a handful of seeds, nuts, and fruit, with a more natural sweetener.
I have made porridge pretty much every single way you can think of – traditional oats cooked traditionally, steel cut cooked the same, both soaked overnight to make the cooking process a little quicker the next day, I’ve made batches in the crock-pot, I’ve made mega batches a few days in advance and heated up a little each day, I’ve eaten quick oats, I’ve made my own quick oats, I’ve used the microwave sachets, and I’ve even *gasp* made porridge with water.
Let’s never speak of that again.
Let’s however, speak of the Quick Oats version, which is simply oats in a little bag with the instructions on the back. Super-handy for travelling, for when you’re short on time and haven’t pre-soaked, or made your own, and when someone who has never made porridge before (hi husband) is facing two toddlers screaming for porridge while mum’s having a lie-in (hi me).
A simple breakfast you can pretty up with nuts, seeds, fruit and soaked chia (a la the picture at the top of the post), or however you like it. Just please tell me it doesn’t involve butter.
For the chance to win $200 to go toward a session with a nutritionist or dietician, a $200 voucher, a seriously cute weekly menu planner to help you jot down all the wonderful foodie things you’ve just learned, and a hamper of Uncle Toby’s oats, please leave a comment below – how do you eat your oats? Do you jazz them up with goodies, or do you just whack a banana on top and call it a day?
Do you – *feigns horror* not like oats?

When working full time my morning oats were microwaved with some fresh or frozen berries in there…. for warm berry goodness! Haven’t been working for a few months now and am enjoying stove cooked porridge, oats, milk and a little salt, plus some sultanas so they plump up during the cooking and then a sprinkle of brown sugar on top! None of this extra milk on top business for me, love them nice and creamy!
(sadness this morning though, the hubby had used almost all the milk so i had to have half milk half water porridge… 🙁 )
Cate Brickell says
I love the creamy honey quick oats with just a dribble of brown sugar (and now I have to share my porridge, we get the big bowl!)
Jessi Glauser says
I love plain oats with almond milk, maca powder, dried cranberries and banana with honey drizzled for added sweetness.
Amber says
My Scottish partner grew up with salted porridge- oh the horror! He’s is quite fond of my version nowadays with grated apple, cinnamon, a little nutmeg, brown sugar and chia.
I plonk oats into everything- I bulk out my dogs’ homemade food with a healthy belt of oats, and I pop a cup into my vegie burger mix for texture and nourishment!
Big love for the good ole versatile oat!
Jojo says
I add Greek honey yoghurt and chopped banana. So yummy! If strawberries are in season I add those too
Felicity says
I feed myself and my premature babes (twins) a smoothie, with oats, oat milk, banana, berries, chia seeds, linseed, youghurt and cacao powder for brekky everyday. Brekky for the win!
Tasha Batsford says
We have ours with dark chocolate and over ripe bananas. Heaven!!
Olivia says
I add pureed strawberries and apple, with a swirl of sugar free maple syrup! DEVINE 😀
Danica Burrows says
I am new to the way of the oat. Have been learning their secrets over the past week or so… having success with cooking in all water (gasp) and then topping the result with maple syrup, cinnamon and milk. Works for me and the yard-ape.
purdy rhodes says
Winter porridge for breakie was a staple when I was growing up, my mum would start it going on the stove before she woke us. Chilly mornings meant getting dressed half under the donna then making a dash for the warmth of the kitchen to spoon honey onto hot porridge. These days I have my mourning routine timed perfectly with getting ready for work. I do my make up while the oats and frozen berries are in the microwave, then top with honey and soy milk, so delicious. If i’m feeling fancy a touch of cinnamon too. Perfection.
AN B says
For years it’s been quick oats in the microwave with a tspn of brown sugar before rushing out the door. But recently I’ve discovered how good pre-soaking and cooking in a saucepan is – either with apple, walnuts and cinnamon added at the end or (this is revolution territory)…. frozen raspberries, chopped hazelnuts and a sprinkle of desiccated coconut. The other life changer has been Katie180’s baked porridge recipe but with raspberries, almonds and vanilla instead of banana and walnuts. And the 4 year old and husband don’t like it so I am forced to make a tray of it then eat it all myself over the course of several days… whoever said porridge cake isn’t lunch?!
Jasmin Henery says
Quick oats with A2 milk, half a banana mashed in and a smidge of honey. My two year old scoffs it down in seconds!
Trainee Mama says
I love the sachets – so quick and easy especially with the ‘fill to here’ line on the back – perfect to make at work. Mum puts oats in her oh-so-delish rissoles to ‘beef’ them up a bit – although one time she added the vanilla oats and the rissoles had a distinct sweeter (but not-so-pleasant) taste : )
dandan says
I only eat oats in winter, not sure why. I love good old fashioned oats with full cream milk and raw sugar. My favourite way to enjoy them is sitting on the front porch with the bright white morning light…and my dogs trying to lick the bowl when i’m not looking!
Kylie Gardner says
Ok, I’ve got this oats thing sorted. Are you ready? Mash up one small banana in a breakfast bowl then top with about 30 grams of rolled oats. Throw in a handful of sultanas, a sprinkling of cinnamon, a handful of nuts (I like slivered almonds), a splash each of vanilla and maple syrup. Pour over about 125ml of milk and cook in the microwave for about four minutes on medium. Add a little extra milk and stir then gobble up 🙂
corrie says
I love my 90 second oats! I love all the different flavours and I love adding a bit of extra milk and “drinking” my oats! It’s such a warm, tasty and filling breakfast… kind of like a warm smoothie!
Elizabeth Wooden says
Im crazy about greek yoghurt with honey, oats and fresh fruit at the moment!! Ive been making it every morning for 2 weeks now and devouring a bowl in about two seconds flat So good!!
Melissa says
I don’t like porridge!!! eeeeek!! BUT I do love oats (raw??!!) for brekky with milk, Greek yoghurt, honey and frozen blueberries. Yummo. I also use oats in any kind of cooking that calls for breadcrumbs. I quickly whizz them in the blender as a healthy alternative! Thank you for this post. I’m currently battling with my fussy 2 year old daily over brekky!! Might try porridge tomorrow morning!! Fingers crossed!!
Tina Swindells says
I’ve taken to the 90 second oats at the moment due to the chill in the air. I use a cup of low fat milk instead of a half cup. Once cooked I simply add a cut up banana and a dollop of good honey (honey from a friend’s hives is fantastic). Cool for a bit and then dig in. I’ve been trying to get my 20 month old to eat it as well but that’s still being a bit of a struggle.
Lauren says
My oat recipe is a little ahh shall we say ‘unique’ and my family will tell you needs
to be tasted before you believe how good it is, but here goes…..Lauren’s carrot
cake porridge….grate one carrot and cook in the microwave with 1/2tsp of mixed
spice until soft. While this is happening I cook my rolled oats, chia seeds,
all bran and milk on the stove as you would normal porridge. Once the carrot is
soft pour into the saucepan with the oats, I then whisk 2 eggs whites and stir
this into saucepan while its off the heat (you need to stir very quickly to
make sure it all breaks up and doesn’t scramble!), next stir through a good
dollop of greek yogurt for a creamy texture and add the sweetener of your
choice I like French Vanilla liquid stevia. Last but not least top with stewed
apple, cinnamon and a drizzle of maple syrup!
Tansy Lou says
We cook porridge in coconut milk then add chia, goji berries and mixed nuts then add maple syrup and more coconut milk to serve. Sometimes we add fresh berries if we have any about too!
Ellie Scarf says
I love traditional oats with water (!) cooked in the microwave and then add natural yogurt and blueberries. The blueberry equation s complex though – if they are less than $5 a punnet it is fresh, if it is more than $5 a punnet – frozen blueberries it is. My ‘fancy’ oats are exactly the same but with halved fresh cherries. OMG.
My husband is a brown sugar oat-er, entirely bizarre! But he thinks cooking oats in the microwave is a crime against porridge so we agree to disagree… He also loves cinnamon and cinnamon sugar in his – but I would note that sometimes early in the morning cinnamon and cumin look quite similar. No wife points were scored on that day…
Danielle MacDonald says
I realise this is a game of skill, not chance, so my answer may not get me on the hot contender list, but the only way to have oats is with golden syrup and milk. Every. Single. Morning. I am aware this outs me as an unsophisticated hillbilly, but I stand by opinion and my family stands behind me. Except my Grandad, he used to have oats with salt and pepper! *gags
Kelly Smith says
Mate, sausage rolls with oats as a base instead of meat is the BOMB!!! I love quick oats as well, with honey. It’s the best comfort food.. i live in Woodend in Vic, and its FREEZING here so creamy oats, organic honey, bit of dried fruit… bloody heaven!!!
Reannon Hope says
I eat my oats in the form of Anzac biscuits- does that count? Although a sweet friend sent me an email with a recipe for baked oats because I’d commented on her picture of them on Instagram- how sweet ?! Anyway I realized it’s a recipe from a cookbook I own so as soon as school holidays hit ( four days & counting) I’m going to try it out. I will also be making Anzac biscuits for the eleventy billionth time #sendalltheoats 😉
Erin says
I blitz 1 cup of rolled oats, a handful of raw nuts, a few dates, a cored apple with skin, a tbsp of sunflower and chia seeds and a pinch of cinnamon. It tastes amazing layered with yoghurt and fruit and keeps in the fridge in an airtight container for a couple of days.
Wendy Wyatt says
6 months ago I set out to transform my eating habits. I started with breakfast and changed to eating oats every morning.
I have them with either blueberries or strawberries with almond milk and a sprinkle of apple pie spice mix
5kg down but still 10 to go so this would be amazing for me to transform my lunch and dinner eating habits
Lilybett and Boy says
We do ‘purple porridge’ in our house at the insistence of my Dear Boy. Add blueberry yoghurt and purple grapes to one bowl of yoghurt and the kid thinks it’s a ‘thing’. Luckily, he’s okay with not-so-purple porridge when the blueberry yoghurt’s sold out and he’ll make do with natural yoghurt and honey. Because he’s not a meat eater (his choice rather than mine), I sometimes add Chia, LSA or other protein packed goodies to make sure he’s getting a good daily dose. It’s his best meal of the day by far.
Boiled Eggs & Soldiers says
We also do “Purple Porridge” in our house, sometimes it’s pink (lots of little girls here) but either way it’s very simple. Do your porridge how you like (my husband is a fan of water(!?!) add some LSA, stir through then add for “purple,” blueberries and stir through or for “pink” raspberries & strawberries. If the fresh berries are out of season we use frozen. A good start to the day!
Jodie@FreshHomeCook says
I love porridge! I make it with milk, blueberries, raspberries, chia, cinnamon & maple syrup. A great kick start to the day!! 🙂
Frederiek says
I don’t really do porridge, but I do use oats. Usually in my breakfast smoothie to make it a proper meal, together with fruits (i.e. mango, apple, pineapple…), different kinds of nuts, chia seeds, flax seeds, freshly pressed orange juice and some yoghurt or milk. Best start of the day 🙂
Sheridan says
I am a recent convert to the goodness of oats for brekky. Thanks to my inlaws going on a health kick a few years ago I was introduced to the tastiness of the following … 1/3cup quick oats, 1/3 cup boiling water, 3-4 sliced peach pieces, a handful of raspberries and blueberries, topped with 2-3 heaped spoons of Greek yoghurt. Yum yum! And it MUST be prepared in that order. It’s pretty much a daily breakfast for me and I Love it! Topped off with a hot cup of tea, mornings just don’t get much better 🙂
The Plumbette says
I drizzle my oats with golden syrup and add a little milk. I love eating my oats during winter and find that they keep me full for most of the morning which means I avoid snacking throughout the morning.
MissFit in Brisbane says
I add liquid egg whites while my oats cook (for extra protein), a little Stevia and a LOT of strawberry and banana, then eat it piping hot on the bit of the couch which gets the morning sun, with a blanket wrapped around my legs and a purring cat on my lap (she’s purring because she likes to eat banana and knows I’ll save her a little piece!).
Carla @ My Yellow Heart says
There is no skill involved in my porridge at all. I am a fan of quick oats, for the ease of the morning rush) and *gasp* I put nothing on top aside from milk because *gasp again* I cook my porridge with water. Hope that doesn’t offend your very delicious looking bowls of porridge above, must get a little more inventive it seems!
Ruth Gomez says
I love Bircher muesli. Oats soaked over night in yoghurt with grated apple. In the morning I add whatever fruits and nuts I fancy. It’s a great brunch dish for when I have friends or family over. My guests can add their own combination from a platter. Yummy, health, delicious oatiness.
I am also in pursuit of the perfect chewy ANZAC biscuit. I have a section on my notebook devoted to it.
Mrs W says
Wow, I’m learning so many new ways to have porridge from the comments below! I cook mine in the microwave with water….is that wrong?! I add diced apple first though so it stews in the water too, and then top with milk, cinnamon and honey.
Brown sugar and butter? I dunno, I reckon I’d give it a go! Might be something in that….
Nicole Beaton says
My sister soaks hers overnight in almond milk with dates, cacao and chia seeds. I like to stove cook mine with milk and cinnamon. I top it with my delicious stewed fruit witch usually consists of apple, dates, dried apricots, sultanas, shredded coconut and cinnamon. Yumo!
Kylie Ramachenderan says
I love oats with fresh fruit and milk, a dash. my boys like quick sat gets, berry only. slightly annoyed with the many leftover cinnamon apple on the cupboard. seriously CUTE menu planner. I need that
Malinda says
As a kid we had oats that Mum soaked all night and then cooked in the morning with milk and brown sugar and we would stir in a big handful of sultanas. It is much simpler now with quick oats. I still make ours with milk and then everyone adds what they want to. I love this as a breakfast option because it fills the tummy. I use rolled oats in everything too, I just can’t help myself.
Thouraya Battye says
I like to mix it up depending on my mood…plain…with sultanas…with brown sugar or with a banana on top! Having brown sugar on top was a trick I learnt at my grandparents and I used to sneak it out at home…but now I am grown up I can have it whenever I like 🙂
Elizabeth@thebackyardlemontree says
I used to know a Scottish guy who used to eat his porridge salty with butter which at the time thought was a bit gross. But I’m a recent convert to the savory porridge with soy sauce and spring onions. It takes a little while to get your head around this but think of it as a super quick congee and it makes sense! http://thebackyardlemontree.com/2014/04/25/mark-bittmans-savoury-porridge-with-green-onions-and-soy-sauce/
Balooh says
Im sure thats a scottish thing, I know a few people who love their oats toasted in butter!! Myself included! Toast the oats in a little bit of butter n salt then add milk n sugar. N golden syrup too. 🙂
Debnjuz says
We love our oats with Banana, honey and chia seeds. That is the children’s standard breakfast in winter.
Elisha Ross says
We top our oats with oat bran, brown sugar and a bit of all bran with a bit of milk. The aim is to make the perfect island of porridge in the bowl. Yummo!!
Shari says
We eat Uncle Toby’s quick oats every day,
My family loves them and never says nay!
Top them with poached apples, mashed banana or apricots and pears,
Eat them straight out of the microwave in my underwears.
Mixed berries are nice and worth a try,
I’ll even bake these oats in muffins, muesli bars and pie.
Much to Veggie Mama’s disgust we do ours with water,
Say what you have to say but to me that’s how you oughta!
sophia says
I love making a nutritious smooth for breakfast, I blend together Oats, banana, kale, mixed berries and a little honey… so delicious and nutritious!
Joanne Emery says
We love them with gorgeous thick creamy organic non-homogenised milk (none of that cardboard stuff!), some brown sugar and a few berries or bananas. So healthy and yummy!
Kelley @ magnetoboldtoo says
I adore them. I even eat them at work and instagram that shizzle. Quick and easy, filling and cheap.
My fav is with chopped dates. OH MAH GAH. I want some now.
nicole kane says
how can people not like oats?
my go-to is with a handful of dried cranberries. they give a little sweetness, and a little punch, and no preparation necessary! you just throw them in while you’re cooking.
monicagosper says
I enjoy my oats in many forms but lately i’ve been making porridge & grating an apple on it & sprinkling cinnamon on it with a splash of almond milk.
Nicole Kent says
I like them with a little bit of honey, a banana and a sprinkle of chia seeds. Healthy, delicious and keeps me full for hours!!!
Diana says
Dry, in a mug mixed with a tablespoon of sugar. I’ve been loving oats this way since I was little, a lifelong habit that’s hard to break.
Diana O says
Made into a steaming hot porridge then smothered with chocolate topping 🙂 YUMMO 🙂
sonya says
We have oats for brekky every morning. The 6-yr-old daughter has them cooked with water then mashes a banana into them and tops them with dates and walnuts. I eat them cooked with water too and then I stir ground cinnamon and sultanas in. The 2-yr-old is a very strange specimen and he eats them dry with nothing else! Just spoonfuls of wholegrain oats straight out the bag. Now that I don’t understand! But at least he isn’t eating Coco Pops or Nutri-Grain! 🙂
JBMarigold says
I mix oats with candied peel, sultanas and cinnamon. MY porridge is like a little bit of guilt-free Christmas every morning!
Karina Lee says
With water, linseed, brown sugar and bananas! It’s my healthiest meal of the day!
Kaila says
I have oats every morning for breakfast! (Except Pancake Saturday in our house:)
My favourite is rolled oats cooked with coconut milk (so creamy!) and topped with melted PB, strawberries and maple syrup and a sprinkle of raw buckwheat!!!
Kara says
Ok confession time. I dont like oats. I really really dont. Its not that I dont WANT to like oats. I have tried many times with sugar, with bananas with honey but nothing. Im tempted to try the flavoured oats but after trying so hard for so long Im not sure I will like them. Sorry Uncle Tobys. My family do love them though.
Mummy Ariane says
I sprinkle cinnamon sugar and various nuts and raisins on a tray and roast until delicious, then stir into my porridge.
Heaven in a bowl
Helen says
I found this great recipe that uses rolled oats in BURGERS! Mixed with flaxseed and chickpeas, they are amazingly tasty. My toddler can’t get enough of the patties so I have a stash in the freezer, each patty separated by a sheet of baking paper, so I can easily get one to cook for his dinner every now and then. Great for fibre and omega 3 fatty acids!
amandagorton says
Oats are great, they are so versatile it is easy to see why they are a SUPERFOOD! Call me old school but I’m I LOVE oats cooked in milk for a thick, creamy texture with a sprinkling of brown sugar for sweetness! Maybe I’m just nostalgic but it’s how I grew up with them as a kid – for me it adds an extra dash of comfort!
Clare G says
I have many not so fond memories of gluggy, cold porridge drowned in clumps of brown sugar… But I recently discovered steel cut oats and love the texture so much more! I cook them with some grated apple, adding cinnamon and a swirl of honey. More yum and less baby food mush!
Leanne Milford says
I love to add chopped dates and pour on some maple syrup. Yum..
Jessica Maloney says
I put them in a green smoothie with kale, celery, apple, banana and chia seeds, before I head off to roller derby training!
Lisa says
I love oats but hate the time it takes to cook/organise them – yes I am a very cook!
One thing I do now is get them ready the night before – add a mix of oats, water/milk, various spices (e.g. my home made chai mix), salt, dried fruit and nuts/nut butter. Then in the morning pop it in the microwave to cook and add some fruit (e.g. stewed apple, pear, mango, banana, plums). This soaking seems to reduce cooking time and it also make the oats really fluffy and creamy.
Amanda Manning says
I am so time poor and not a morning person, which is bad for a mother of two. I usually just make a banana smoothie with oats, rice milk and vanilla essence and off I go. My 4 year old is now obsessed with her banana, rice milk, oat, and vanilla breakfast shake EVERY MORNING! I’m just Hoping it’s better than a bowl of cereal and cow’s milk that her sister eats.
Heather Hopley says
I make a bircher muesli-add chopped dried fruit, honey, and cover with milk overnight. In the morning add yoghurt, grated or cooked apple and slivered almonds. Nothing better!
Glenda McDonnell says
Hot and steamy, with a drizzle of honey, juicy sultanas and a dollop of cream…delicious but unfortunately not diet friendly, so it’s just a dream…it’s usually skim milk and a few blueberries for me !
Pauline says
I love to stir through some peanut butter & honey then have chopped up banana on it…tastes better than it sounds
Kirsten W says
A delicious blend of whole rolled oats with almonds, cashews and seeds, oven baked with a touch of vanilla. On cold winter mornings the only thing that gets me out of my cosy bed is the thought of a warm bowl of oats.
JESS says
I get mine ready the night before (easier when the kids are in bed, not standing at your feet in the morning whinging because they’re STARVING for breakfast)! I put oats, a couple of teaspoons of chia and half regular milk and half coconut milk. In the morning, I heat it, top with chopped banana and a tiny bit of brown rice malt syrup and share it out of a big bowl with my little kids 🙂
jowill says
I eat my oats with chopped nuts, pepitas and dried fruit. We all love oats in my family, and the chickens are no exception. These spoilt chickies have their oats soaked in hot water then stirred until creamy and they eat it greedily.
Smilie2601 says
Feeling nostalgic as
I reminisce,
Sweet-scented oats
complimented with dried fruit epitomised bliss,
Oats! Flour! Coconut!
Honey! Water! Butter! Dried Fruit; 20 minutes to bake,
All senses this slice
will unquestionably awake!
Mum would create, place
in a brown paper bag AND then bestow,
This slice we
depended to help us grow!
A recipe that has
been generously handed down to each generation,
A nutritional snack
that as a mummy I can bake in batches, which has been a lunch box salvation!
LilMiss Kibby says
i am ALWAYS in a hurry (my 4 kids are my priority in the mornings) so usually i make them in the microwave then they sit and go cold while i am madly packing lunches and brushing hair., 5 mins before i am due to leave i frown throw chopped up banana and honey on top, down in it about 5 spoonfuls and think “hey at least i ate breakfast!’
sapna says
We love eating oats for breakfast and sometimes for snack time as well.
Both of my sons love to eat them with a fruit face character – In a plate i keep some fruit slices , chopped nuts etc and they love to garnish their oats by making fruit faces on the top and eat them with full enthusiasm. After all a good healthy oats breakfast will keep them alert and active.
I like to eat my oats with lots of chopped nuts. My husband loves to eat them plain.
Laura Scriven says
With frozen blueberries and honey,
It’s made in a hurry.
Turned purple and filled with taste,
Never any waste!
Bree @ Twinkle in the Eye says
This week I stewed two bunches of rhubarb with apple and instead of water added the juice of an orange and the whole rind. Tastes wonderful on porridge. On an ordinary day I am a fan of brown sugar and a sprinkle of All Bran for a little bit of crunch. My Dad taught me that one.
Mikaela Cowan says
With vanilla almond milk and a sprinkle of cinnamon!
Emma Sparnon says
For me it is simple , just sugar and cinnamon
But for the boy it’s a little more complicated…
Some days it’s jam and others is yogurt
On bad days it’s sugar with maple syrup
But his favourite day of all is when mummy adds sugar and syrup with banana chopped up.
Rebecca Sharp says
I’m quiet boring and still eat my oats like Mum use to make them for me, cooked in micro with water, then topped with evaporated milk and brown sugar! I also like them in biscuits, slices, muffins (I use them instead of wheatgerm in your strawberry yoghurt muffins) and also homemade granola!
Rebel Without A Pause says
Luckily for me the Oats part is simple! A quick zap in the microwave with some water, then a splash of soy milk and a squeeze of honey = yumtown.
The eating part… not so simple. I usually smash them into my face while standing up at the kitchen bench.
One babe on the hip trying to yank the spoon from my hand as it makes it’s way to my gob.
One toddler hanging on to my leg complaining that she doesn’t want to sit next to her brother who just farted.
One farting, giggling boy at the table yelling at me to “Hurry up with my Oats already”.
And one teen rolling her eyes at her brother, while pushing me out of the way so she can get to the cutlery drawer because, even though she has been up for an hour or more the hair style conundrum has chewed into her breakfast time and she is going to miss the bus.
Ah, like I said… luckily for me the Uncle Toby’s Oats part is simple.
scattley says
With crushed frozen berries(and the juice) I have started eating oats for the first time since primary.
Kerry-Anne James says
Almond milk and a sprinkle of cinnamon, with a lot of blowing on the spoon because the porridge is always too hot to eat.
Pip (@melbournelass) says
We have oats every day so we NEED to jazz them up. First we always stove cook them, stirring in full cream milk, water and then a cup of blueberries, a cup of raspberries. Once it all becomes a delicious melted mess we spoon them out and mix in a tablespoon of greek yoghurt to add to the creaminess, drizzled with rice malt syrup to bring out the sweet flavour of the berries. Divine. See no need to deviate from oats when they taste this good!
Moni says
I can confidently say, that as a savoury person, my favourite use of oats is in fake sausage rolls. This recipe is my favourite! http://herestheveg.blogspot.in/2006/09/august-26-2006-non-sausage-rolls.html Otherwise I’ve recently discovered the oats sachets and they are a real winner for breakfast at work!
Erin says
Butter on porridge? No. Not ever. LOVE oats though, it’s one of the very few things I like about Winter! My morning bowl of porridge is quite the business though, even if I do say so myself. I start with traditional Uncle Toby’s Oats which I zap in the microwave with milk (always milk), then I sprinkle with LSA mix and add some sliced fruit, whatever is available, today was banana and kiwifruit, then I finish that bad boy off with a hefty spoon of greek yoghurt and dive in! It keeps me going until lunchtime, only uses one bowl to make and best of all, even if the healthy choices go out the window later in the day, I know I started well and that has to count for something, right?!?
Rach says
My obsession with oats is ridiculous. Even on a steaming mid-summer’s day, I am known for cooking porridge up for breakfast! I will have oats anyway but my favourite is with blueberries and maple syrup. I’ve always got a batch of anzacs on hand and love them whipped up in a smoothie.
Ally L says
To me, oats aren’t oats without Strawberry and banana. I love to also add cinnamon, honey, yoghurt… The combos are endless. Oats are just so versatile, and delish!
Steph says
Oh I can hardly count the ways I use oats. In porridge of course (which I often do as chai spiced porridge with dried fruit, cinnamon and cloves). Also on our regular dose of apple crumble and I’m just about to put them in some ‘muesli’ cookies for snacks.
I ran out of oats for the last two days and I was one cranky son of a bitch!!
Barbara Fehmel says
Oats are the healthy way to start the mornings, they fill me up and give me a boost to start the day. Then there are the biscuits, cakes and deserts that have Oats in them. Such a versatile product AND healthy one also.
Charlotte says
I’m
just like Goldilocks, my hair’s even the same colour
And our choice for oats could not be duller…
We both like plain porridge, not too hot or cold,
A superfood breakfast that’s fairytale old!
Catherine says
As a shift worker porridge saves me from eating rubbish, quick and easy I can have a bowl of porridge and be full and therefore avoid temptation to eat unwisely
shez says
Much as I’d love to say I eat a bowl of steel cut oats soaked in alkaline adjusted water for an overnight cook each morning, I’m honestly more of a two-packets-of-instant-in-the-microwave kind of girl. Though I have been topping my nuked oats with steamed milk from my borrowed milk frother and a couple of almonds recently so I feel perhaps I’m moving up in the fancy oats world.
Eliza says
All depends on what sort of fruit’s on hand – right now it’s porridge (weekends) or Bircher (weekdays) with rooibos-poached pears. Delicious.
Rebecca says
I honestly scoff down my Uncle Toby’s Quick Oats as I walk out the door in the chaotic morning rush!!! They get me through the morning. It certainly would be nice to sit down and savour them.
kat says
Can’t live without these Oats cos they see my laziness and raise it with deliciousness. I do add a banana, bit of honey and a sprinkle of cinnamon OR if I’m feeling saucy, almonds and raisins (yes RAISINS, little chunks of moist yum)
Christina Howes says
Okay so I love my oats with a heaped table spoon of peanut butter, lashings of pumkin seeds, chia and shredded cocoa nut..oh and can’t forget sliced banana sweetened with brown sugar. Mmm delicious! Following instructions on 90 sec microwave oats packets(Original, with water) they come out too dense, not as fluffy as I have been used to in past years.I am 90+ and have forgotten the secret. Please tell me how to get back to the lighter texture.
