Last week we drove the Great Ocean Road, me just post-surgery falling asleep in the car every half hour, the little one managing to keep a lid on her carsickness for most of the trip, and our eyes constantly on the shoreline. Well, except that one kid who likes livestock.
We started late, took our time, and by sunset we were shuffling over the bridge to see the Twelve Apostles, amongst photographers, tourists, and kids in woolly hats. My fingers freezing, I kept taking shots, telling the girls not to climb on the railing, and marvelling at the colour of the water. It really is such a beautiful place and we enjoyed every minute of it. (Well except that really depressing soup situation I was faced with in Apollo Bay).
We stayed in a motel because that’s what you do on a Victorian road trip and I was asleep by 8pm. Best holiday ever? You betcha!
So have you ever been? What’s your favourite bit?

I’ve travelled around so many parts of Australia but the Great Ocean Road, and the Twelve Apostles (or however many are left now, ) in particluar are my favouritest! It’s such a magical place. It’s also very chilly, Billy! I just went at anytime o’clock but these sunset snaps are stunning! Hope y’all had big fun.

we had a ball! I think they might be my favouritest too. I love country Victoria – and I’ve driven around plenty of Australia myself! highest praise, eh?

We did a round trip leaving Melbourne in the morning, travelling the Great Ocean Road finally making it to the 12 apostles at sunset then driving back to Melbourne that night. I was fortified by the fattiest, greasiest fish and chips from Torquay. We spent too much time at Werribee Mansion which meant we got there in the nick of time. It was well worth it!
Veggie Mama says
I drive past that mansion and I really want to go! I ate DEEP FRIED EVERYTHING in Lorne and I regret nothing.

What a nice part of the ‘hood. Asleep by 8pm. BEST.
Veggie Mama says
You betcha! That codeine knocks me sideways.

So pretty………………….what happened with the soup?
Veggie Mama says
Oh it was horrible. HORRIBLE! I was so looking forward to spicy pumpkin soup with garlic bread, not spice water and boring toast on the side. 🙁
Nicole @ The Builder's Wife says
Just a stunning drive! Sleep by 8pm, sounds equally beautiful xx
Veggie Mama says
I’m gonna go so far as to say that was the best bit!

What a stunning photo. We had a wonderful drive around that area pre-kid – it was such amazing scenery. Sounds like you enjoyed your trip (barring the soup situation!)
Veggie Mama says
Isn’t it beautiful? I did it as a kid too, minus bad soup 😉
Emily @ Have A Laugh On Me says
It’s one place I can’t wait to visit, once the kids are older and the trip from the GC to Melb isn’t that horrendous. Not quite sure that time will ever come actually. I hope you’re recovering well.
Veggie Mama says
Haha it was easier in the days when we didn’t have to wear seatbelts and could do whatever we liked!

I went to uni in G-loooong. It’s lovely. We used to grab some fish and chips (the old fashioned way, you know wrapped up in newspaper and all) and go for a drive down that way. Lovely.
Veggie Mama says
With vinegar? please tell me you had them with vinegar!
That Bettie Thing says
YES YES YES!! My dad is the only other person I know who eats chips with vinegar too!!
Veggie Mama says
Oh man I want some right now
Nicole - Champagne and Chips says
I still have never been. I really must remedy that- only 4 years in Victoria but that’s not rally much of an excuse.
Veggie Mama says
Hah you won’t regret it! So pretty.
The Plumbette says

Veggie Mama says
You should! so beautiful

I hope everything was okay with your surgery? I love the 12 apostles. We visited early morning though. Sunset would be amazing!
