I have a confession to make.
I am a thief.
In 1990 I coveted my neighbour’s homemade Chipmunks “Born To Rock” tape so badly that it somehow ended up at my place, in heavy rotation on our beat up old tape deck. When my neighbour was over one day, she spotted the tape on our kitchen bench and asked if it was hers. I mean, it had to be, she’d written “Cipmaks” on it, but dear reader I LIED and told her that for some reason I’d spelled it the same when I made a copy of her copy.
I’m sorry Allison. The lure of the Chipettes singing Heaven is a Place on Earth was just too much.
You see, when I was a young’un, my sister and cousin and I were pretty obsessed with the movie The Chipmunk Adventure, where the chipmunks race around the world in hot air balloons, and it’s become a bit of a thing for us. HEY DON’T YOU KNOW THAT WE’RE OFF TO SEEEEE THE WORLD! WE’RE OFF TO FIND OUR DREAMS!
“Miss Miller… I want Alvin, Simon, and Theodore to meet me in Europe. Bye bye!”
To be honest, when Eleanor sings to the orphaned baby penguin, we all still get a bit emo.
The Chipmunks still hang out and do stuff from time to time (and Dave now looks suspiciously like Jason Lee, and if you know me, you know I don’t mind that one bit), and recently they went on a road trip to stop Dave from proposing to his girlfriend (thanks, boys!) so we had a little party to celebrate their new movie Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Road Chip being released to iTunes. It was also my kid’s fifth birthday, but you know, not as important.
It was so fun seeing the little ones hang out and watch the movie and meet Alvin (I never got to do that as a child and I even stole in his name!) and make the same memories with each other like I have with my family.
Maybe they’ll call each other and randomly shout “DAVID, ARE YOU DRUNK?!”… I mean, we can only hope.
It’s made me think of so much I’m showing them from my own childhood in the hopes that they’ll love it as much as I did – Rainbow Brite, Sooty, Ninja Turtles… ebay had never known such a crusade. I may even let them play with that mint-condition 1982 Blue Belle one day. We’ll see.

What have you shared with your kids from your childhood? Star Wars? My Little Pony? Return to Oz (not sure my mother’s ever forgiven me for calling her Mombi for about eight years straight)? Samurai Pizza Cats? THE SMOGGIES?!!
Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Road Chip is out now on iTunes and on Blu-ray & DVD, March 31
Thanks to 20th Century Fox for providing the movie, the food and the loot – it’s gonna be hard to top a real Alvin for the next birthday party. I may as well give up now.

My girls love Alvin and the Chipmunks too. Watching all the Disney classic movies with my girls has brought back memories of my own childhood. The music from Beauty and the Beast gets me every time. x

It’s so funny… when the kids don’t eat I always think of the Beast shouting at Belle “WELL GO AHEAD AND STAAAAARVE!” when she won’t come down to dinner.

My daughter’s favourite toys are currently my old stash of Barbies (complete with 1980s handmade clothes and knitted dresses!), My Little Ponies and Keepers. I can’t believe my mum stored them for so many years!

Oh that’s so cool! I have handed down a teddy and a Cabbage Patch, pretty much the only things that were saved from when I was young… hence my ebay addiction haha. They’ve got more Polly Pockets than I could have ever dreamed of

OMG you thief!!! But I used to do a few li’l sneaky things like that too…. like cheat when the teacher told me to go put 2 shopping points in my workbook – but I’d give myself a whole bunch more than 2. All these things coming back to haunt me now that I see my kids being dishonest – but phew! It’s ok. We turned out ok! Oh and this party is amazing!! I LOVE ALVIN. I think my girls would spew if I threw them a Cabbage Patch party… but I would be in some kind of heaven.
Veggie Mama says
I now immediately need to have a Cabbage Patch party!
I also have to laugh at the beginnings of dishonesty, right and wrong… sometimes her sheer cleverness blows my mind and although it’s frowned upon, I do have to marvel at her ingenuity! And then there was that one time she stole a marble…

I tried to get my kids to watch Kimba the White Lion. I was thrilled when I found the videos at Target years ago. They weren’t into it at all. I also tried to get them to watch The Sound of Music and they walked out in disgust after ten minutes. I think it was the shorts the boys in the movie were wearing that did it. At least the chipmunks have been updated. Your littlest one has the cutest squishable cheeks 🙂
Veggie Mama says
haha for some reason my kids loved The Sound of Music, but they refuse to watch Pound Puppies, or the old My Little Pony episodes. I’ve failed them!
Also: how good was Kimba?! and Vicky the Viking.

My mum recently gifted my two boys a DVD of The Secret of Nimh (remember the Don Bluth cartoons?) – this was one of my favourite movies when I was 5–7 years old, and it was very cool to see it again after all this time (30 years!!!). My eldest, who’s nearly 6, loved it, but apparently it’s a bit too scary for the not quite 4 year old!
I think they’re also ready for Bananaman, Dangermouse and Trap Door…
